Forums at UCV
The forum is a proud tradition in the life of UCV. In October 1926, church members organized a free forum that held meetings on Sunday afternoons, usually twice a month. This was the first forum in the city that placed no restrictions on speakers, representing Unitarian values in action. Then, as now, participants discussed a wide variety of subjects, and speakers included prominent persons in the community.

Forums are usually presented in the following format:
  • 1st Sunday: Environment Committee
  • 2nd & 4th Sundays: Social Justice Committee
  • 3rd Sunday: Board of Trustees

Email Unitarian Forum to enquire about forums or provide ideas for future forums.

Currently, Mary Bennett coordinates the forums and is looking for a co-coordinator.

Dig in for Climate Justice
Sunday, September 5, 12:30, Fireside Room, Hewett Centre
Presenter: Eric Doherty

On Sunday, September 10 at 2 pm, take direct action against climate crime. The South Fraser Freeway would greatly increase carbon emissions, and trash BC's best farmland. We can stop it if you dig in and help! This work party is sponsored by The Company of Canadians and Gateway Sucks.

Eric Doherty has been an anti-Gateway writer and activist since 2006.

Letters from the Lost: A Memoir of Discovery
Sunday, September 26, 12:30 pm, Fireside Room, Hewett Centre
Presenter: Helen Waldstein Wilkes

Helen’s family escaped the Nazis in March of 1939 and settled in southern Ontario, where they learned to be Canadian and forgot their Jewish roots. As an adult, Helen learned about her past and the fates of her family in Europe from old letters and it changed everything. Helen will describe her experiences and her book, Letters from the Lost: A Memoir of Discovery, in which she has woven her family's stories and her own into a compelling narrative of suffering, survivor guilt, and overcoming intergenerational obstacles.
