Madness Radio Listening Group continues!
with Rev. Steven Epperson
1st and 3rd Thursdays
next classes: February 2 and 16, 7:30–9:30 pm, Hitschmanova Room (downstairs in Hewett Centre)
The Madness Radio Listening Group Continues! Madness Radio presents voices often marginalized by the media, and takes a critical approach to mental health policy, corporate marketing, and traditional medical science. It focuses on personal experiences of “madness” and extreme states of consciousness. Each in-depth interview, hosted by mental health activist Will Hall, features authors, advocates, and researchers on madness-related topics, including Living with Voices, Talking about Suicidal Feelings, Therapy for Psychosis, Unusual Beliefs, and Coming Off Meds.
The group will listen to a Madness Radio program, and then discuss the program. Everyone is welcome, whether you attended the Listening Group in the autumn, or if it’s your first time. This is an excellent opportunity to experience peer and advocate support, as well as for those who just want to learn more about and appreciate mental diversity.
Upcoming Special Event Weekend
Will Hall, the acclaimed mental diversity counselor and advocate, returns to Vancouver! Hall will lead a workshop at UCV and will be the featured speaker at the UCV Sunday worship service on March 18.

C.G. Jung has had an enormous impact on how we think about psyche and soul. This seminar will provide an opportunity for beginners and veterans alike to engage in fundamental concepts of analytical (Jungian) psychology, to discuss them, and to develop a personal stance on Jung and his ideas. The class will read and discuss Jung’s Map of the Soul: An Introduction by Murray Stein, former president of the International Association of Analytical Psychology. It will be available for purchase at Banyen Books for $25 plus tax.
Gail Lyons is a psychotherapist in private practice and an advanced candidate in training with the Ontario Association of Jungian Analysts.
Building Your Own Theology
with Bennett Mitten and David Macdonald
Mondays, beginning February 13, 7 – 8:30 pm, Biddle Room, Hewett Centre
Fee: $20 (for BYOT curriculum text)
Based on the assumption that we are all our own theologians, this classic Unitarian Universalist adult education program invites participants to develop personal credos: the fundamental religious beliefs, values, and convictions that inform and direct the living of our lives. Through five proposed developmental tasks, participants explore human nature, ultimate reality, history, ethics, and religious meaning. BYOT begins with an introduction to our seven UU principles.
Building Your Own Theology is open to all UCV members and prospective members.

Tai Chi at UCV continues!
with Brock MacLachlan
Tuesdays, 7 – 8;30 pm, Hewett Centre
next meeting: January 17
fee: $30 (sliding scale – no one turned away) or $8 drop in
In tai chi, practitioners learn how to bring mind, body and life-force energy (qi) into harmony, and achieve optimal balance, centredness, body structural integrity and keen mental awareness. Tai chi can be viewed as the ultimate exercise in that it positively enhances self-awareness. This class is for all ages and body shapes.
It is important for those of you interested in learning tai chi to know that absolutely no commitment is expected of any student to attend on a weekly basis. The lessons, focusing on tai chi core principles, are structured in such a way that any attendance (whether it is once or twice a month, or once every two or three months) will still be of benefit. Attendance on a weekly basis will of course make it easier to learn the actual tai chi forms.
Wear comfortable clothes and no-grip shoes, i.e., smooth-soled – no runners or trainers. Stocking feet are too slippery and not recommended.
Brock MacLachlan has practiced tai chi for over 25 years with Grand Master Sifu Raymond Chung. Brock is well qualified for formal tai chi instruction.
Restorative Yoga at UCV continues!
with Christy Forman
Thursdays, 7:30 – 9 pm, Lindsey-Priestley, Hewett Centre
next session: February 2
fee: $25 (sliding scale – no one turned away)
With restorative yoga/conscious relaxation, the body can find its way back to health. Safety and support are key in this practice: it calms the body so that a natural “relaxation response” will support the immune system — we can come back into balance and health by simply resting. The class focuses on gentle movement, restful supported yoga poses, and breathing and meditation.
This class is for all ages, types of physical limitations, and unique body shapes. No knowledge of yoga is required. All levels of experience and flexibility are welcome. Wear comfortable clothes.
Christy Forman has studied yoga for fifteen years and used yoga principles to help her heal from sports injuries. She is passionate about teaching others how to find health again and has been doing so for the past five years.
